Gilas Pilipinas crashes out of FIBA Asia Cup, misses Top 8 after Japan blowout - Jul 19, 2022
Gilas Pilipinas' woes continue to pile up. The Philippines failed to reach the FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 15 years after a 102-81 loss to Japan in their knockout playoff at the Istora Stadium in Indonesia on Tuesday, July 19. Just two months after falling short of gold in the Southeast Asia Games, the Nationals crashed to their worst Asia Cup finish since they wound up at ninth place in 2007. NBA player Yuta Watanabe (206-F-1994, college: GWU) proved his mettle by chalking up 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in just 19 minutes as the Akatsuki Five beat the Filipinos in the Asian championships for the first time since 2003. The Philippines had won five straight games against Japan in the continental showpiece. But Watanabe led the way in busting that streak as he scored 6 of his 12 first-half points in a 14-2 run that turned a 5-5 deadlock to 19-7 lead and paved the way for Japan to mount a 50-34 halftime advantage. Not even the exit of Watanabe after he tweaked his ankle with seven minutes left in the third quarter changed the complexion of the game as the Japanese stretched their lead to as big as 28 points. With Watanabe out, Japan turned to guard Yuki Togashi (170-PG-1993) and naturalized big man Luke Evans (203-PF-1991, college: CBU), who hit timely buckets in the last two quarters that prevented the Philippines from mounting a comeback. Togashi chalked up 18 points on a 5-of-7 clip from deep on top of 6 assists, while Evans delivered 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal. Bobby Ray Parks (193-G-1993, agency: BIG) churned out 16 points and 3 assists to lead Gilas Pilipinas, which fully came apart in the fourth quarter where it trailed 71-99 at one point. Ying-Chun Chen (182-PG-1993, college: Liberty) led the Taiwanese with 20 points and five rebounds, while Cheng Liu (192-F-1990) got 16 points and six boards in the tough loss. Courtesy of: news.cn Boomers through to Asia Cup quarter-finals - Jul 16, 2022
Australia have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIBA Asia Cup with a 78-53 defeat of Indonesia in Jakarta. None of the players who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics are involved in the tournament, but spurred on by a smattering of NBL stars, the Boomers nevertheless made it through the group stage undefeated. The major difference between the two sides on Saturday night was Australia's ability to consistently find multiple avenues to the basket. Indonesia relied on shooting the three-point ball and skipped out to an early lead when Australia struggled to land their own shots from the deep. But just as they did against Saudi Arabia, the Boomers wrestled the momentum back in the second quarter and held the lead to the main break. The Australians worked harder to convert rebounds into points and were more sophisticated at both the offensive and defensive end. By three-quarter time, they had built up a 15-point lead and couldn't be chased down. Duke University convert Tyrese Proctor (187-G-2004), 18, led the Boomers scorers with 14 points, while big men Thon Maker (216-C-1997) and Samson Froling (212-C/F-2000, college: Creighton) each came close to recording a double-double. Courtesy of: china.org.cn Taiwan suffers 87-73 defeat to South Korea in FIBA Asia Cup - Jul 14, 2022
Taiwan lost 87-73 to South Korea in their meeting in the group phase of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Indonesia Thursday, bringing the team's record to one win and one loss. The loss means that if Taiwan, competing under the name Chinese Taipei, wants to advance to the next stage, it has to win its next game, which is on Saturday against regional powerhouse China or hope that Bahrain remains at the bottom of the group losing every game. In each of the four groups at the Asia Cup, four teams compete for the top spot, which automatically puts them through to the quarterfinals of the Asia Cup. The second and third-placed teams in each group play on in a "quaterfinals qualification" round with the four winners progressing. Currently, South Korea tops Group B with a perfect 2-0 record after claiming an important 93-81 win over China on Tuesday, the same day Taiwan outhustled Bahrain 102-84. At the postgame press conference on Thursday, Taiwan head coach Charles Parker said he expects the matchup against China to be a physical game as the Chinese players are relatively bigger in size. "Experience wise, they are probably equal with us," Parker said. "I think what we have to do, again, is what we lacked today, which is our shooting." In Thursday's game against South Korea, the Taiwan team only shot 31-74 from the floor, including a poor 23.8 percent from the three-point arc. However, the American basketball coach is still hopeful and feels the team can win games if it makes those crucial shots. Earlier in the day at Istora Stadium in central Jakarta, Taiwan played well at the start of the game and only trailed South Korea 20-22 at the end of first quarter. However, the team lost focus in the second quarter, dramatically falling behind as South Korea led a 29-15 run backed with power inside the key and consistent sharp shooting from the perimeter. GILAS Pilipinas' comeback from 22-points down fell short as it bowed to Lebanon, 95-80, on Wednesday night in a disappointing 2022 Fiba Asia Cup debut at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta. The Filipinos were on the back foot from the start but Carl Tamayo led a bench mob in a 14-1 comeback that trimmed an 82-60 Lebanon lead early in the payoff period to just nine, 83-74, with 4:42 remaining. But Lebanon found an answer in Hayk Gyokchyan (203-F-1990, college: F&M) and Wael Arakji (194-G-1994), who converted a pair of three-point plays that doused the Filipinos' fightback and brought the lead back to 14, 89-75, in the last 1:51. The tough start left the much-maligned Gilas side with a mountain to climb in its bid to advance from Group D, where it will face minnow India and Thursday and nemesis New Zealand at the weekend. Tamayo scored 10 of his 15 points in that belated fourth quarter rally, to go with his six rebounds, three assists, and three blocks for Philippines, which will have two days to recalibrate before facing India on Friday at 4 p.m. Thirdy Ravena fought through a deep gash -n his right eyebrow after a scary fall late in the second quarter and still finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the losing cause. Samjosef Belangel (177-G-1999) paced the Philippines with 17 points on 3-of-8 shooting from deep, to go with his three assists, while Bobby Ray Parks (193-G-1993, agency: BIG) had 15 points on 4-of-7 three-point clip, on top of his four rebounds in his Gilas return. As consistent as Gilas' snipers were, Lebanon's were far more precise as they shot 9-of-18 from deep with Gyokchan making four of his five treys to nab 19 points to go with his eight boards, and two assists. Wael Arakji led the Cedars with 20 points and four assists, while naturalized player Jonathan Arledge (207-F/C-1991, college: ODU) added 19 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. The trio were crucial in Lebanon's third-quarter breakaway - an 18-6 run that turned a close 49-45 lead into a 16-point edge, 67-31.
