HAIL AL RAYYAN THE CHAMPIONS!
QUEZON City - Al Rayyan
of Qatar claimed the 16th FedEx FIBA-Asia Champions Cup, the
second in club history by thumping a gritty Fastlink of Jordan, 83-76,
Sunday night (June 5) at the Araneta Coliseum. Al Rayyan remained
spotless in the weeklong tournament emerging victorious in all its seven
games.
The day belonged to
Todd Day as he went on fire in the first half, unloading 24 points
and at some points outscoring the whole Fastlink squad. Playing
with an injured finger, Yaseen Ismail Mahmoud capped the first
half with one his patented thundering dunks to push Al Rayyan further
ahead, 45-36.
Suddenly, Sam
Dahglas pumped in 11 points in a key 17-8 run to begin the final
period and give Fastlink the lead for the first time, 71-69, and 3:25 to
go. With the score tied at 73-73, Saad Abdulrahman Ali
fired a big triple to put Al Rayyan on top for good at the 1:12 mark,
76-73. Erfan Ali Saeed then put the exclamation point with
a strong two-handed dunk with 30 seconds left, 79-73. Free throws
settled the final tally after which Al Rayyan celebrated by dousing
Coach James Angeli and everyone on and near their bench with
water.
Day
finished with a total of 30 points in a no-relief 40-minute job.
Saeed followed with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Pervis Pasco
added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Scotty Thurman paced
Fastlink with 22 points while Ayman Deis added 18 points and 10
rebounds.
After
the game, the tournament’s individual and team awards were held.
Fadi El Khatib took home the FedEx Most Valuable Player Award and
was joined the All-Tournament Team by Ali and Saeed of Al Rayyan,
Enver Shwabzooka of Fastlink and Romel Adducul of San Miguel
Beer. Deis won as the Accel Best Rebounder while Sambhaji Kadam
of the Indian Cagers got the nod as the Air21 Best Passer. Al Rayyan
won its other Champions Cup in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur. The 17th
FIBA-Asia Champions Cup will be hosted by Kuwait next year.

La Sagesse d. Saba
Battery, 74-71
Dethroned champion La
Sagesse of Lebanon took Third Place over Saba Battery of Iran, 74-71, in
a game with a bizarre ending. Trailing by six points entering the
final period, the Lebanese slowly climbed back with Elie Mechantaf
scoring the go-ahead basket with a minute to play, 72-71.
Suddenly, Saba failed to score with Fadi El Khatib banging in
another basket to seal the outcome for Lebanon. After the buzzer,
Saba players and officials charged at FIBA referee Ho Kok Yew of
Malaysia complaining about the latter’s non-calls during the final
minute. Cooler heads prevailed before the situation went out of
hand.

ANTIPOLO City - The
championship cast is complete and the stage is set for tomorrow’s grand
finale of the 16th FedEx FIBA-Asia Champions Cup at the

boys did their best to keep their loyal fans happy. Action returns
today to the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
San Miguel Beer d.
Army, 73-57
A day after failing to
make the semifinals, host San Miguel Beer wasted no time in recovering

Kazakhstan, 96-87. The Kazakhs suffered a big blow when their top

a knee injury in the first period. With Sultanov gone, Al Kuwait
capitalized on their foes’ errors to clinch the victory.

Ayman Dies then doused the rally by canning a triple in the next
play, 70-66. The Iranians then failed to score, with Scotty
Thurman and Francis Ireifej icing the game from the free
throw line.

Champions Cup at the expense of defending champion La Sagesse of
Lebanon, 87-84. Earlier, Day blocked a driving Kenny
Satterfield to force the overtime, 81-81. Al Rayyan went on a
13-0 run to begin the third period, 54-45. Satterfield and
Stephen Howard slowly rallied Sagesse back in the contest, only to
fall short in the overtime. Al Rayyan remains the only undefeated
team in the tournament.

16th
FedEx Champions Cup Day Six
ANTIPOLO City - The
favored squads marched into the semifinals of the 16th FedEx
FIBA-Asia Champions Cup Friday (June 3) at the Ynares Center. True
to form, all teams upped their game since it meant no tomorrow for the
losers. Indian Cagers d. Al
Sharjah, 92-82 The Indian Cagers
salvaged some pride by trouncing Al Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates,
92-82, for their first win in the tournament and in the process claim
Ninth Place. Al Sharjah was greatly affected by their management’s
decision to fire their two imports two days earlier.
Robin Robinson
had a double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds. Riyazuddin
backed him up with 24 points. Ibrahim Abdulla led Al
Sharjah with 27 points followed by Ayoub Abbas with 24.

Army, 76-65 Saba Battery of Iran
stayed undefeated by eliminating Army of Syria, 76-65. The
Iranians hardly missed the services of Andre Pitts who preferred
to rest an injury incurred in their previous game. Hamed
Eslamech and Aydin Bahrami showed the way for Saba with 15
points each. As usual, John Carter and Tony Rutland
bore the load for Syria with 21 and 19 markers respectively.

89-82 Not ready to take a
chance, Al Rayyan star Yaseen Ismail Mahmoud suited up despite an
injured finger. Tobol raced to a 30-25 lead after one period but
Al Rayyan inched back capped by a buzzer-beating heave by Todd Day
from close to the half-court line and tie the score entering the second
half, 47-47. With the momentum on their side, Al Rayyan went on a 17-0
tear to begin the second half, 64-57. Aleksandr Garshin
tried his best to rally Tobol but the rally came a bit late.

Kuwait, 95-92 Al Kuwait pounced early
on a visibly tired defending champion La Sagesse of Lebanon, controlling
the first three and a half periods. Waking up just in time, the
deadly trio of
Kenny Satterfield, Elie Mechantaf and Fadi El Khatib
conspired to give back the lead to Sagesse midway through the final
period. Kuwait tried to bounce back, with Yahee Albhar
sinking a triple to threaten at the 37-second mark, 91-93. In the
ensuing play, El Katib almost turned goat as he was called for an
offensive foul. But Stephen Howard saved the day by
swatting away with authority the strong drive of Chudney Grey.
Satterfield grabbed the loose ball and was quickly fouled, sinking both
his shots to give La Sagesse breathing room, 95-91, and five seconds to
play. Kuwait’s Jameel Watkins was then fouled, splitting
his free throws for the final count.

Fastlink d. San
Miguel Beer, 86-83 Host San Miguel Beer
bowed to Fastlink of Jordan, their third straight loss and dashed all
hopes of winning the Champions Cup. Anthony dela Cruz
missed a triple with three seconds on the clock that could have tied the
game and forced overtime. It was a tough climb for the Filipinos,
who used a 17-4 run late in the final period to get back into the
contest, 81-86. Jimmy Alapag then threatened with a basket
at the 24-second mark, 83-86. Florendo Ritualo quickly
fouled Sam Dahglas, who missed both his free throws. The
Filipinos grabbed the defensive rebound but bungled the final play of
the game.
Fastlink Coach Maz
Trakh fielded only six players and the ploy worked with Scotty
Thurman leading all scorers with 28 and Ayman Deis with 15.

FedEx Champions Cup Day Five
ANTIPOLO City - The 16th
FedEx FIBA-Asia Champions Cup moved out of Metro Manila for the first
time Thursday (June 2) with action shifting to the Ynares Center located
in the hills east of the capital city. The day’s matches decided
the pairings for today’s quarterfinal round.

San Miguel center Enrico
Villanueva was ejected in the third period after fighting with La
Sagesse’s Stephen Howard. A fallen Howard launched a kick
but Villanueva grabbed his foot dragged Howard across the floor like a
mop. Still, the defending champion Lebanese parried torrid rallies
by the Filipinos to claim the second spot in Group A. San Miguel
evened its record at 2-2.
16th
FedEx Champions Cup Day Four
QUEZON City - Action in
the 16th FedEx FIBA-Asia Champions Cup returned to the
Araneta Coliseum Wednesday (June 1). As usual, the Filipino fans
were treated to quality games from Asia’s top clubs but left a little
disappointed after their home side lost for the first time. In a
slight change of schedule, the next three playing dates will be at the
Ynares Center in Antipolo City. The finale on Sunday will still be
at the Araneta.
Al Kuwait d. Al Sharjah, 81-74 Al Kuwait turned to
prolific guards Chudney Gray and Osamah Mubarak to key the
team’s explosion in the second period that saw them raise their lead
from two points at the close of the first period to 17 by halftime,
43-26, over the suddenly import-less Al Sharjah of the United Arab
Emirates. Geremy Robinson and Antoine Hyman were
mysteriously missing from the bench. Gray and Mubarak then fought
of repeated attempts by Al Sharjah to come back, to level their win-loss
card at 2-2 and keep Al Sharjah winless in three starts.
Gray finished with 25
points while Mubarak added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Ibrahim

Qataris limited the Syrians to only five points in the second period to
run away at the half, 51-18. From there, it was easy sailing for
the 2002 Champions Cup winners as they aim for a second title this year.

simply outclassed the Kazakhs, still opted to play their starters
despite the outcome having been long decided.
Fadi Al Khatib sizzled with 30 points to top La Sagesse followed

Iranians of good seeding come Saturday’s quarterfinal round. The
Iranians led all the way, allowing the Filipinos to only deadlock the
score twice early in the first half. The Iranians used their
height advantage to out-rebound the Filipinos, resulting in fast breaks
that translated into an 11-4 fast break points-advantage for Iran.
Andre Pitts
submitted 24 points before falling to cramps with five minutes to play.
That was enough as Lorenzo Hall supported him with 17 points and

The score was tied after the first half, 34-34, and Qataris upped their
game in the second half to pull away slowly. By the final period,

Army of Syria, 94-78. A strong second half was the key, as the
Army could not make any dents into Fastlink’s lead, allowing Fastlink
coach Maz Trakh to use his role players. Ontario Lett led

FedEx Champions Cup Day Two
QUEZON City - Strange
twists added to an already very interesting storyline at the resumption
of hostilities at the 16th FedEx FIBA-Asia Champions Cup
Monday (May 30) at the Araneta Coliseum.
Al Rayyan d. Al Sharjah, 101-44 Al Rayyan of Qatar made
a smashing debut by toying with Al Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates,
101-44, but at a very grave cost. Al Rayyan star player Yassen
Ismail Mahmoud sustained what appears to be a dislocated finger on
his shooting (right) hand six minutes into the contest and is doubtful
for the rest of the tournament. However, the Qataris hardly felt
his absence by leading comfortably throughout the one-sided affair.
Todd Day did the biggest damage in the first half, at some points
outscoring the whole Al Sharjah team.
Mohammed Seleem
Abdulla topped Qatar with 28 points and 17 rebounds, most coming
