Thailand Slammers win ASEAN League second season - Feb 19, 2011

Thailand Slammers are new ASEAN League champions. They dethroned the Philippine Patriots to clinch the title. The Slammers overcame the Patriots on the road tonight to sweep the Final series. Froilan Baguion (170-G-80) came up with 19 points to lead the winners. The Slammers looked the better side in the opening frame. They opened the game with four straight points and maintained the lead throughout the opening term. Froilan Baguion gave the visitors an 18:13 lead after ten minutes. However the Patriots used a 12:2 run midway through the second term to gain a 27:21 lead. The teams traded baskets before Warren Ibanez made it 32:30 for Philippine Patriots at halftime. The hosts stayed in charge in the third term. Steve Thomas (203-F-81, college: Middle Tenn.St.) ensured a 13-point lead for the Patriots 49;36. However Froilan Baguion and Jason Dixon (205-C-73, college: Liberty) trimmed the margin at 5 points with one quarter remaining 47:52. Chris Kuete helped the visitors erase the deficit with under four minutes remaining 63:63. The teams were still tied at 66 with two minutes to go when the Slammers went on a deadly 9:0 spurt and sealed the winning outcome. Ardy Larong (190-G/F-80) nailed 15 points, while Jason Dixon added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Benedict Fernandez (183-G-84) and Gabe Freeman (198-F-85, college: Costa Mesa JC) accounted for 16 points each, while Freeman added 13 rebounds. Steve Thomas had 14 points and 15 boards in the loss.
